Android One… Infinix Hot 2… This is not a drill

Introducing the Infinix Hot 2... Android One phone for Africa

I repeat, this is not a drill.

Google, the makers of android mobile OS, gave a hint about developing a low end Android phone for developing countries at their annual developers' conference last year and how they plan getting the next 1 billion users on the Android platform. The project is tagged Android One.

All along, I thought Google's definition of low end meant phones the typical five thousand naira phones which are almost useless except for making calls, sms and with dual-SIM but running on Android. You know those kinda phones called feature phone or dumb phones in some quarters. (I have one by a popular brand running on Android and really, it is quite frustrating because I can hardly install any reasonable app on it.)

Today, my assumption was proven totally wrong! The Infinix Hot 2 launched yesterday, in partnership with Jumia and MTN is completely different.

Just when I thought Infinix Hot Note is the ultimate and affordable phone, Hot 2 released yesterday (Tuesday) in a couple of African countries took over the title belt without a fight.

Starting with the camera, it's equipped with 8MP rear camera (with LED flash) and 2MP front selfie camera. It has a 5 inches HD, touchscreen double-glass display (half an inch smaller than Infinix Hot Note). Double glass means double durability. Did I mention that it has an elegant design and built-in damage resistance? Okay, I just did. Lol.

It is dual-SIM, has FM radio and a long lasting 2200 mAh battery to let you enjoy your music, videos and games on top of your calls and regular apps. It is coupled with battery saving feature which lets you enjoy an extra 90 minutes before you run out of battery. Also, it has 16GB internal memory and a microSD card slot for additional memory space. This is definitely what Google meant by phones for developing countries.

Infinix Hot 2 is pre-installed with Android 5.1 Lollipop. But here is the catch, Android One phones will always have the latest version of Android OS. In other words, even if you purchase it now, as soon as the new Android OS (Android 6.0 Marshmallow) is released later this year, your phone will download, install and automatically update itself to the new Android. Same goes for whenever a new version of Android is released.

This might not sound like a big deal, until you realise that even the Android high end phones that cost you 6-digits don't update that fast. Not even half that fast, you have to wait for months or even a newer version of the phone to be released before you get an update.

There are two variants; a 2GB RAM variant which costs N19,500 and a 1GB RAM variant which costs N2,000 less.

What's more? You get a 1GB data at N500 available for 12 months if you buy it today. This offer is available while stock lasts, as they say.
